Kine Weekly said “The newest strong ‘crooks slide out’ try peopled which have a colorful assortment from vital and arresting letters, and these, skilfully manipulated by the publisher and you will movie director, permit the movie in order to tread water efficiently. It is merely toward end up which actually starts to break apart, however the slap-up finale rescues they on ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and wisely dialogued, it will have zero higher issue inside lifestyle off its very unsightly title.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin told you “The movie actions from the a simple rate, the brand new dialogue try smooth and you may characterisations fundamentally energetic. Knob Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes direct this new shed professionally, since the investigator is actually enjoyed big aplomb by that individual identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody throughout the The newest Yorker listed “Which terse and you will tight movie noir is according to the newest romantic and you will top-notch issues of the term profile, the new criminal mastermind (played because of the Knob Powell) trailing a posh illegal local casino. Brand new film’s blogger and you can manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess game, having mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) spent some time working within local casino and you will dated good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic software, the new cast’s suavely regulated gestures out of like and you can hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may smartly cocky photos (and his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle a hidden antique of your own style.” [ ten ]
Diversity provided the movie kudos, creating, “This will be an intelligent whodunit, which have focus on scripting, casting and camerawork training they over the mediocre. Pic has actually activity and you may anticipation, and you may certain small satisfies of humor to incorporate preferences. Ace activities from the Knob Powell, given that a gaming house overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, once the an authorities inspector, and additionally within the get . Although the patch observe a familiar pattern, the fresh characterizations are fresh and activities sufficient so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue is terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney contact. Unusual cam bases arrive once in a while so you’re able to heighten focus and temporarily stop the attention. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling given that movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, original writer and you will user music producer, in addition to aids in making this a soft development.” [ eleven ]

Its generally a point of watching Mr. Powell go through his paces smartly if you find yourself an enormous cast off stars and you can performers bring your typical help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great nothing lady just who brings forth new best in your and you may Ellen Drew ‘s the smooth and you can slinky vixen who gets your to your jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy due to the fact villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a unique ready tour since a weary cops inspector exactly who ultimately closes possible. A great deal of drinking and you will smoking is carried out from the all worried.” [ a dozen ]
Philp French, writing on Observer told you: “That it rarely revealed motion picture noir is the chill, controlled directorial introduction of your own kept-side publisher which proceeded and then make for example classics due to the fact Most of the the King’s Men and the Hustler .” [ thirteen ]
